Self-Storage: Keeping Your Things Safe

DIY Packing Tips to Make Your Move Less Stressful

Moving house is typically an arduous task. Thus, you may find your excitement for your new home may be overshadowed by the anxiety of pulling off the relocation on your own. This is why some people would rather opt to enlist the services of a company that offers house removals to make the transition easier for them. However, what if you do not have the money to pay these professionals to pack and transport your belongings for you? You can make the relocation process easier if you know how best to go about it. This is especially important for people who are moving house for the first time and are cash-strapped for removalists. Here are some handy tips to DIY moving.

Plan in advance

One of the greatest mistakes you can make when moving is opting for last minute packing, as it increases the chances of you losing items and generally being disorganised. To ensure that you stay on top of things, plan your relocation in advance. Planning involves making lists of all the things you are going to pack, contacting your utility services providers and ensuring that your new home will be ready for occupation on your chosen date. When packing, start weeks in advance to give you ample time to put together all the items from the different rooms. Begin with the rooms less used and pack your items in order of what you least use so you can finish off with your regularly used items.

Have an overnight bag

As aforementioned, the moving process is tedious. Therefore, it is highly likely that you will be exhausted once you have moved into your new home. Having to start rummaging for items on the first night can be quite a downer. To avoid this, have an overnight bag packed with all the essentials that you would need before you get around to unpacking all your items. This overnight bag can contain toiletries, pyjamas, a change of clothes, snacks, your electronics plus their chargers and whatever else you think you cannot do without for more than a day.

Colour-code and label your boxes

An easy way of organising your items would be to use colour-coded boxes. It is good to label each box with the items that it has, but if there are numerous boxes, it will still take you time to sift through them. To make it easier, use a specific colour for a different room. For instance, assign the colour green for the kitchen then have all these boxes placed in the appropriate room once you get to the new house. You could also enumerate all the items inside the box on its side, which will make it easier for you to track your belongings.
